Now now, we’ve all been through that cartoon-gaming-comics stage as children, wouldn’t it be interesting to have a debate on the greatest characters of all time? Let’s relive the good times and see how many of these 12 icy characters you recognize!
Iceman
Series: X-Men
Robert Drake is a mutant who has the ability to form ice using the surrounding water vapour. He’s actually the second member of the X-Men, right after Scott “Cyclops” Summers.
Sub Zero
Series: Mortal Kombat
Sub-Zero is one of the original characters in the Mortal Kombat series, appearing in every series since the first arcade game. A cold-blooded and violent assassin dedicated to his clan, Sub-Zero can teleport, manipulate shadows as well as freeze his opponents.
Elsa
Series: Frozen
Elsa is the latest princess to come out of the Disney franchise. She needs little introduction and the song Let It Go has become quite a hit among children and adults alike.
Penguin
Series: Batman
I’ve never been as amazed by an umbrella as I do with Penguin’s. Other than keeping him dry from the rain, it also acts as a weapon (machine gun), even as a hang-glider too! A mobster-type of criminal, he fancies himself as a “gentleman of crime”, often dressed in suits and tuxedos while committing crimes.
Jack Frost
Series: Traditional customs, but in this case, Rise of the Guardians
A personification of Old Man Winter, Jack Frost is more of a mischief-making spirit, seemingly originated from Anglo-Saxon and Norse winter customs.
Mr Freeze
Series: Batman
Another villain in the Batman series. Mr Victor Fries (pronounced as Freeze, really), an accomplished cryogenicist, was involved in an accident that altered his body in such a way that he is only able to survive in sub-zero temperatures.
Winter Soldier
Series: Marvel/Captain America
James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, Captain America’s sidekick during the World War 2 appeared as the main antagonist in the 2014 movie, Captain America: Winter Soldier. Not very chilly compared to the rest.
Lich King
Series: Warcraft
When Ner’zhul attempted to escape Draenor, he was immediately apprehended by the demon lord Kil’jaeden, who enacted the blood pact that Ner’zhul had sworn many years earlier. Kil’jaeden ravaged and destroyed his body, but kept his spirit alive and encased it in a block of ice from the Twisting Nether. Kil’jaeden granted him increased power, including that over death itself. Ner’zhul ceased to exist, and the Lich King was created.
Articuno
Series: Pokemon
A third of the legendary birds (Zapdos and Moltres, too) from the Kanto region. This bird can chill the moisture in the air when it flaps its wings. According to legend, it appears before doomed travelers lost in icy regions. As seen in the anime, Articuno sometimes aids travelers and guides them to safety.
Crystal Maiden
Series: Defence of the Ancients
A character in the hugely popular game, Defence of the Ancients (DOTA), the Crystal Maiden is a ranged hero relying on the Intelligence stat. With moves such as Crystal Nova, Frostbite, Arcane Aura and Freezing Field to subdue her enemies, the Crystal Maiden is used as a support class or disabler for most players.
Snow Villiers
Series: Final Fantasy XIII (13)
A self-proclaimed hero who helps those in need, Snow is arrogant and acts without much thinking. He’s thrusted in the series when the love of his life, Serah was crystallized in their world. With a variety of Ice and Water magic within his grasp, Snow teams up with a variety of people to save Serah and his world from danger.
Kula Diamond
Series: King of Fighters
Kula Diamond was originally created and infused with ice powers to defeat the pyrokinetic K’. Able to create ice at will and transforming her body into ice, Kula is the perfect enemy of flame wielding opponents.
