Because this happens. What you’re looking at in the photo above are two laptop batteries; only that one is bloated while the other is how normal laptop batteries are supposed to look like.

This can happen when you continue to leave your devices plugged in even when they are fully charged, or when you leave your devices switched on for extended periods of time.

How it can affect you

Of course, there are varying degrees of bloating. A slight swell will just cause an unsightly bump on your gadget. A bloated battery like the one pictured above will cause your trackpad and keyboard to crack or become unresponsive. This rarely happens, but In the worst case scenario, the battery can leak and explode.

What you should do

Remove the battery immediately. This helps prevents any further damages to your device. When you are replacing the battery, it is always better to get the original rather than settle for a cheaper, third-party alternative.

How you can prevent it

Stop overcharging your gadgets. Unplug it when it reaches 100%, and charge it only when it is necessary. Charging your devices overnight is therefore, a big no-no.

Overheating can also cause batteries to bloat, so try not to use your devices (especially phones) while they are charging. Try not to overuse your devices or leave them switched on for extended periods of time as that can cause them to overheat as well.

Also, use chargers that are compatible with your devices. It is best if you use chargers that are directly from the device’s manufacturers and avoid getting the cheaper, third-party alternatives which are not approved by the manufacturers.
